I had a bit of trouble getting the 8-bit signed hex spread visualised in my mind, so Deltafire kindly put this together for me - a javascript slider to convert from decimal! Even if you don't plan to use it, it demonstrates how the hex range sort of 'loops around' the xero point and makes some sort of sense...
